The year 1955 marked a decisive turning point for S. H. Raza. Having arrived in Paris in 1950 to study at the École Nationale des Beaux-Arts, his early years were shaped by financial hardship. This difficulty eased considerably when he signed an exclusive fifteen-year contract with Galerie Lara Vincy, providing the stability needed to transition from gouache to the more substantial medium of oil and to travel extensively across Europe. As a result, his landscapes evolved into monumental, haunting visions. Fellow artist Ram Kumar observed this shift toward an “intellectualized intensity,” noting a rejection of earlier “sentimentalism” in favour of sombre colours and meticulously balanced forms.
Untitled, 1955 perfectly exemplifies this era, imbued with what Kumar described as a “strange fantasy” of jumbled architecture. Beneath a “leaden and malevolent” midnight sky, vibrant blues and greens ripple like iridescent scales, charged with a distinct internal phosphorescence. Unusually, the composition incorporates a bulbous Eastern Orthodox dome rather than the more familiar spire, lending it a distinctive architectural presence. By 1956, Raza’s mastery was solidified when he became the first foreign artist to win the prestigious Prix de la Critique.
